Canon: Yu Yu Hakusho
Character: Yusuke Urameshi
Timeline: Ep84 - "Kurama's Anger, Gourmet's Guest" - Shortly after Kurama damned Elder Toguro for eternity
Personality:
Yusuke is a punk, to put it blatantly. At first he really didn't have any interest about anything. As the series progressed, Yusuke started to grow more compassion and more caring. While he does still throw around his apathetic, rude behavior, he can still respect (loosely stated) and appreciate others. At first you would think Yusuke doesn't care about his friends. The way he treats them and picks on them would make you think he just bullies them, when in reality, that's just his way of showing affection. He never had a father figure to look up to, and his mother didn't seem like she gave a shit about him. She was always wasted and always careless. Despite how strict and authoritative his principal could be, Yusuke misinterpreted these messages into something else. Like only wanting to show for his school rather than care for the students individually. It was only after his death that he begun to realized people thought something of him aside from being a street punk. This was the first push in his personality development.

With that being said, Yusuke will go out of his way to protect and save his friends. His friends being the people that accepted him for he was just as he accepted them for who they were. They seem to hold a special place. You could say they make his very character, because they are the ones who taught him he could care for people other than himself. There have been many demonstrations throughout the series where Yusuke grows insecure when he thinks his friend's lives are in danger. He will promptly save them and take down the enemy that posed the thread to begin with. However, due to the rough nature Yusuke got himself into. He's not always able to save them. When one does pass away he will mourn for them (sometimes even violently) while beating himself up for not being strong enough. This is when his compassion is colorfully revealed. It also shows that they do mean the world to him.

He's probably best known for his sense of humor. Yusuke is quite the joker, and cracks jokes frequently, even if the situation calls for the opposite. Regardless of how dire and serious the situation is, he still finds room to joke. Sometimes its a way to lighten the situation, or sometimes it's because he does find the situation to be humorous enough to comment on. For example, when the situation wasn't serious involving a pitiful demon, Yusuke commented: "What are the chances of a demon being a total wuss?" and "There's no way I can deflect both of those with my Spirit Gun. Spirit Grenade Launcher maybe, but definitely not a gun." One of his more serious situations jokes would be: "I'm sorry. When I kill people, I'm used to them staying dead." to Toguro when Yusuke was under the impression that he had killed him.

Along with his humor is his crude nature. You could say Yusuke doesn't have a very good filter. He speaks his mind with whatever comes to mind. Has quite the dirty mouth. One of his more crude show of nature would be when he commented "What are you waiting for? Your balls to drop?" Something not many people would say. Especially someone his age. Yusuke is the kind of guy that will tell it like it is and joke about it if need be. Even if he's on the receiving and losing end.

Yusuke hates authority. He doesn't take direction well, if at all. Yusuke was never really good at listening to what older or more status oriented people tell him to do (like his principle, or Genkai. Even Koenma.) Yusuke is rebellious, and does whatever the hell he pleases at nearly any given moment. Save for when things are wagered against him by foes. It's hard to convince him otherwise, but sometimes he'll comply. Like for example, when he won the competition to be trained under Genkai. As much as he hated following under her and her harsh training, he still followed-through to become stronger. Hell, in the end he end up respecting her even if he didn't like how she did things.

He's not very bright and acts on impulse. Yusuke never participates in school and even skips detention. He's on the fence of failing middle school and doesn't try very hard to succeed - Pretty much a drop out and not all too bright. Yusuke even shamelessly admitted that he scored a 12 on his test. Out of 100, mind you. Academics are probably one of his weakest suits. Sometimes his ignorance applies in battle, and most of his victories turn out to be a stroke of luck when he didn't have anything planned to save his sorry hide. Kurama notably pointed this out when he was under the impression Yusuke intentionally bailed himself out of trouble but found out it was only luck.

Background:
Yusuke started off as a typical middle school delinquent at the start of the series. He carries an apathetic attitude about life, not caring to attend class, or graduate middle school for that matter. A prankster of sorts that's always getting into street fights with kids from his school and neighboring ones. He's considered the strongest fighter around and everyone fears him for who he is except for Keiko. A childhood friend of his.
His first show of development is when he pushes a kid away from a speeding car. While the kid did survive (and would have regardless) Yusuke died in the process. It took a lot for Yusuke to be revived which ultimately relied on a close friend or family kissing him on the lips with the desire to bring him back. Namely Keiko.

Yusuke and Kuwabara are given a mission by Koenma to collect special items. In doing so they meet three demons. Two of which make a return later after their début. Least to say Yusuke had won these battles and some respect amongst his current comrades.

Koenma dubs Yusuke as a spirit detective with his newly awaken powers as sort of pay back for reviving him. It was then when Yusuke was referred to Genkai where he could receive special training to become stronger. With Kuwabara, the two advanced and entered a competition to see who was worth enough to train with Genkai. Toward the end Kuwabara lost and Yusuke was forced to draw power to save Kuwabara from certain death, thus earning him a win and several months of training.

A new trouble emerged around this time. Four beast gods took it upon themselves to stir up trouble. It was then when Keiko's life was in danger, and one the four beast gods specifically targeted her. Kurama and Hiei ally with Yusuke and Kuwabara on a mission to defeat these gods and restore order to the world once more. It wasn't until the last god, Suzaku, that Yusuke finally fights. In doing this, he is faced with Keiko's possible demise before he's pushed over the edge and annihilate Suzaku completely in order to save her life.

Order was restored and things were peaceful enough until Koenma presents Yusuke with another mission. This time to save a woman from a rich man and his henchman. Yukina. Kuwabara insist on coming along even thought he doesn't have to. The two boys and Botan head for the mansion in the attempt to save Yukina. In this they had to defeat low-class demons and some stronger ones. It wasn't until Toguro that he and Kuwabara actually had real trouble. It was Toguro that enlightened them of how weak they really were. It was by some miracle that the two heroes won the fight, and saved Yukina. Some days later while Yusuke was out and about, he encountered Toguro a second time. The first time he saw him only 20% of his power was displayed. Toguro then demonstrates 60% of his power and threatens Yusuke to join the Dark Tournaments or everyone he cares for will be killed.

Yusuke and his friends train for two months until the tournaments begin. On their boat ride their, only time team could survive. That was Team Urameshi's. Yusuke brings a mysterious fifth member needed in order to compete which leaves some of the team skeptical. It was around this time, that Yusuke passes out from all his hard training to only awaken when he was next to fight. That being his battle against Chu, the leader Team Rikkuyukai who specializes in drunken-style fighting. Inevitably, Yusuke is deemed the winner and his team moves on. They are given a day of rest before their next fight.

Team Urameshi's next opponents are Dr. Ichigaki Team, a crazy doctor with experiments for fighters. Kurama and Hiei are left distracted leaving Kuwabara and Yusuke to fight on their own against the team. Kuwabara, being naturally sensitive figures out that the men are beginning controlled against their will and asks Yusuke not to kill them. The two become corner and the mysterious masked fighter is forced to take a hit for Yusuke. The masked fighter is revealed to be a young women with pink hair. The girl then eventually frees the men of their imprisonment forcing the doctor to fight for himself. A battle which Yusuke is cornered into fighting. He of course wins, and their team moves on. They immediately move to the next round in a back-to-back fight with no resting period.

Team Masho becomes their next opponents. They are cloaked with hidden identities. With most of the team rendered useless, they are forced to fight to the brink of their extent to win each fight. Kurama is then falls unconscious and loses the fight. The next fight being Jin vs. Yusuke. Though admittedly their fight isn't as serious as Jin only seems to fight for fun. After their battle Kuwabara is up next and he doesn't appear to win. It wasn't until Yukina, his crush, shows up that he gathers enough strength and determination to take his foe down and win the fight. Their team wins and they move on, and they are provided with a break. The girl mentions what a fool Yusuke is and claims that she can do better. She lures him to a cave while the others recover where she reveals her true identity as Genkai.

Genkai draws out an orb from her body. Saying that is her time to pass on her teachings to her Yusuke, but with a catch. If Yusuke's body cannot accept this power, it will likely kill him before he accepts. He is then given the orb which his bodies absorbs where he endures unbearable amounts of pain. Mean while the rest of his team does their own business. That being fighting the next round. Without Yusuke and the masked fighter, the rest of the team is forced to continue the tournament without them. Hiei and Kurama being the first two to go in their own battles. Kuwabara is next to fight, where his opponent is actually cheating, however. The host sees nothing wrong with this and Kuwabara is forced to continue on with the way things are. He wins. Genkai returns and it is her turn to fight. Genkai wins the fight against Suzuka and is victorious. It was around this time Yusuke recovers from the orb and is born with a new-found power. Team Urameshi claiming a spot in the finals.

Yusuke returns during the battle of Genkai and Toguro in which he sees Genkai killed by the hands over her old friend. This enrages Yusuke and he becomes bent that none of his friends will fall victim to his enemies again. His adrenaline does not last long before he grieves over his teacher's death along with the rest of his friends.

Team Urameshi finally faces against Team Toguro and the first to go is Kurama vs. Karasu. Kurama's only hope of victory falls dependent on him drawing his full-fledge demon half. Kurama succeeds and Karasu becomes overwhelmed, after a few complications Kurama stands victorious. Next Hiei faces Bui. Hiei is quick to summon the dragon of darkness which proves useless against Bui. Hiei claims victory of the battle in Bui's defeat. Kuwabara is last to learn of Genkai's death at this time before his fight with Toguro's older brother. He becomes enraged about this. Not to mention all attempts to defeat Elder Toguro are in vain. Elder Toguro eventually loses. Next is Yusuke's battle against Younger Toguro. The time for revenge begins now. Even with the power inherited from Genkai, Yusuke is still too weak to defeat the demon. Toguro unleashes all 100% of his power and Yusuke's chances of winning seem to dwindle. Yusuke removes his spirit cuffs, a potentially different attempt to wind, but all attempts still aren't enough. Toguro still holds a seeming victory in this match.

Toguro is determined to draw out all of Yusuke's powers, and in doing so a friend would have to be sacrificed. It was when Genkai possessed Buu that she relays to Toguro that it would have to happen. This pisses Yusuke off, but Genkai counteracts that this was the harsh reality he would have to accept if he isn't strong enough to keep what he wants. Thus, Kuwabara is targeted and killed awakening Yusuke's full potential.

(This summary ends at his canon point. Here is the wikia which provides the rest.)

Abilities/Additional Notes:
Strengths:
For starters, Yusuke is rather athletic. He can endure long-winded exertions with his body and has well toned muscles. His physic is possibly one of his best features too. Not only is he athletic, but as the series progresses Yusuke grows stronger and stronger. At first a simple car accident was enough to kill him, but due to his growth in strength, now even being hurled through walls does nothing but keep him down for a few minutes - seconds even. In addition to being strong and enduring, he has agility and can operate much faster than an average human. He has a lot of endurance and very high resistance to most things. This makes him pretty dependable in battle assuming his enemy isn't stronger than him.

Yusuke is both a long-distance fighter, and a close combat fighter. Most of his skills come from that of street fighting in his early days, and he was even considered the most feared guy around. His skills are undeniable. Later on, he learned to manipulate and hone his spiritual power. Eventually Yusuke adopted the spirit gun. Giving him the edge in battle to shoot from afar.

Being a spirit detective, Yusuke is prone to spiritual abilities. The more he trains with them, the stronger he becomes, and the more abilities he develops. To name a few. One is the spirit gun. It's self-explanatory. He simply aims his index finger, collects ball of energy at the tip of his finger and releases it as a shot. It's his trademark attack and his most used one.
Next is the spirit shot gun, similar to his original, first learned move. The vital difference is rather than using a finger alone, his whole fist is the weapon. A larger collection of energy is drawn out and released into countless miniature shot gun attacks. It's excellent for hitting more than one target or thoroughly attacking a single target. This technique can also be used as a rapid-fire and shoot one after another (as opposed to just one alone or all at once.) His spirit manipulation is fixated on bullets whether they be small and accurate or large and wide.

He can also mask his body in a layer of his spirit energy to give his physical attacks the edge. As with most of his attacks, his concentration primarily focuses around his fists. As useful as they are offensively, he also uses this technique in a defensive manner, allowing him to deflect or block spiritual/demon based attacks directed toward him. Lessening or canceling out the damage altogether.

Lastly, his spirit wave. Rather than launching his spirit energy outside of his body as an attack of its own. It's builds around his body. It amplifies his attacks and makes him powerful in close-combat. However, since this technique demands him to exert his energy at once, it becomes hard for him to control and even becomes a liability.

Like Kuwabara, but not as keen, Yusuke is able to see the supernatural most humans can't. Ghosts, demons, or spirits that aren't visible to the human eye can still be seen by him. This spiritual awareness also allows him to pick up spirit (or demonic) energy from others.

Yusuke, while not always optimistic, does have a good sense of humor. He doesn't fall easily to despair and vigorously tries to his best in everything he does (except for school of course.) Determination is easily noticed when fighting or competing. Sometimes he'll go to any length to see he is victorious. Not just that, but he is caring too. His ability to form bonds with others have led him to get quite a following. Yusuke, crude as he is, has more allies and acquaintances than he can probably count. He is revered for both his stupidity, and his compassion.

Weaknesses:
Yusuke may be able to take unimaginable amounts of damage and still survive, but he isn't immune to dying. If he is the weaker of the two, someone could very likely render him useless and kill him. This is experienced countless times throughout the series when he just isn't strong enough. Nevertheless, it shows that like everything else, he is capable of dying. Yusuke has technically already died once before, and who's to say it wont happen again?

Truth be told, Yusuke's spirit energy is channeled with his life energy. This concludes that he doesn't have an unlimited bank of energy that he can continuously draw from. If he uses too much too soon, Yusuke is left empty and vulnerable during battle. Even if he doesn't use it all at once, he's able to run out no matter how much he reserves it. Without his spirit energy he is forced to rely on mere strength alone which doesn't always give him the advantage in battle.

Additionally, if he exhausts his energy entirely, he's prone to dying. Spirit energy does come from the spirit after all, and if there isn't any left than he cannot live. Careless exertion of energy can lead to death. There was a case in point when Yusuke used all his energy to defeat Suzaku in one fatal blow and risked dying. Kuwabara simply couldn't cope with it and decided on a whim to transfer some of his own energy into Yusuke if only to keep him alive. This resulted into Kuwabara falling unconscious due to lack of energy. (Meaning Yusuke is also vulnerable of falling victim to this.) Knowing this, he doesn't carelessly throw around his energy, and actually avoids attacking with his spirit energy unless he has to.

Yusuke isn't at all bright. In fact he's quite the dimwit and has earned that title rightfully. Even his comrades see him as an idiot (not nearly as much as Kuwabara sometimes.) Seldom does Yusuke rely on strategy in battle. Most of his attacks are on impulse and most of his victories are won by luck. His lack of intellect leaves him vulnerable to those who put a little more thought into the situation. Luckily it's not so severe that he always loses, but it does draw out battles longer than they have to be. In short, if he were smarter, he would avoid casualties more often.

First-Person Sample:

[It was the familiar, loud mouth teen. He was never afraid to speak his mind it seemed.]

All right, I'm getting bored sitting around doing nothing.

[All his friends were on a different league than he remembered them being. It was the damn time gaps, and he happened to be pulled earlier.]

I need some practice, so if any of you have the balls to take me on, I'll make it worth your wild.

Don't blame me if you lose a tooth or three.

[He was serious about this training regime, and he wanted his opponents to be challenging. It just didn't feel right being normal.]

So who's interested? I got all day!

Third-Person Sample:

It all seemed like a blur, going from watching Kurama take out elder Toguro to being in a barren wasteland. His first question would be how he got here, but there really wasn't anyone to talk to. Yusuke couldn't even sense those who were with him before he arrived here.
"Well isn't this original?"
No really, he was upset! For once, can he deal with something without a different problem popping up? The tense teen took a moment to survey his surroundings. Was this even the same world he was in before? It looked much different than he was use to and felt different. If he could even describe it.

"Someone want to tell me what the hell's going on?" You know. Just in case one of those stalkers were lurking by. Demons enjoyed stalking and Yusuke knew it. After a few minutes of no reply his guard dropped. Someone was going to pay for his, and Yusuke will make sure they paid well. He wasn't going to make any progress just standing around waiting for something to happen.

In the midst of his wandering, he came across a unicorn. Yes a unicorn. That was a perfectly logical thing to find. Not someone's lost pet or a stray demon. For someone who experienced a lot of unnatural happenings, this by far had to be one of the worst ones.
"Oh look, a unicorn. Now I know I'm losing it." The hell kind of place was this? "What's next, a giant bird--" when suddenly a giant, ostrich-sized bird ran past him faster than he could register it.
"To hell with this stupid place!"

Whoever was behind this better pray Yusuke doesn't find them. There was fucking with him, and then there was fucking with him. The detective wasn't about to idle around and take this bullshit. The enraged teen (practically) stomped about in search of some sort of lead. He eventually stumbled across what was made out to be a civilization. One he's never seen before, but he hasn't seen a unicorn or chocobo either.

"Someone better tell me what the hell is going on!" He yelled into the town!
