Character (Original Universe)
Name: Yusuke Urameshi
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Canon: Yu Yu Hakusho
Canon Point: Post Canon
History: Written history and Here is the wikia which provides the rest.
Personality:
One word that could best describe Yusuke is: delinquent. He lacks respect for his elders, and speaks with a sharp tongue. Ignoring any authoritative figure, Yusuke is infamous for ignoring school dress code and constantly skipping out on his classes. On top of that, he constantly found himself in street fights for various reasonings. Sometimes it was his bad attitude, sometimes he happened upon the wrong turf. It most cases, his fights were a result of his previous ones, and the people who fought him were seeking revenge. (They never got it.) Yusuke is rebellious teenager, and does whatever the hell he pleases at nearly any given moment. He never participates in school and even skips detention.
At the start of the series, Yusuke is shown not having any tangible interests, and his only real hobby seemed to be picking fights with others. He was your average angst building teenage boy with a deadbeat mom, and no father figure to help raise him. His only real motivator at the time being Keiko, a childhood friend who still bothers and nags him. (But only because she cares.)
In spite of his life problems, deep down Yusuke wasn't a bad person. His death was a result of saving a young toddle from a car crash (although, the toddler would have come out unharmed anyway. It's the thought that counts). It was through his death (during his afterlife) where he learned how much people actually cared about him. Including his irresponsible mother. This eye opening revelation brought a different perspective to Yusuke. He was so stuck in his own world, that he couldn't understand the intentions and interests of others.
With how he treats his friends, you would think Yusuke didn't care about them. That's just Yusuke being himself. In reality, he's over protective them. Not the kind of protective where he stops them from doing what they like. The kind of protective of 'so help you Enma' if you so much as lay a finger on them. For example, Younger Toguro used Kuwabara's (fake) death as a means to awake Yusuke's full potential. It was under the guise of his best friend's death that he essentially went Hulk on his enemy. Another example is when Yusuke and his friends challenged the Four Saint Beasts in order to rescue Keiko (as well as the rest of the city.) Yusuke even went as far as stealing a bicycle and riding faster than a sports car to try and save Kuwabara from his captors. No matter the circumstance, Yusuke will always go out of his way to save his friends.
Yusuke's most prominent trait is his sense of humor. If there's a joke to be made, he'll be sure to make it. Regardless of the mood or atmosphere, it could even be serious, Yusuke still manages to find something sarcastic to say. Sometimes it's a method to lighten the seriousness of his situation. Other times, most often, it's because he can't keep his mouth shut and blurts whatever comes to mind. For example: "There's no way I can deflect both of those with my Spirit Gun. Spirit Grenade Launcher maybe, but definitely not a gun." Due to his lack of filter, his comments can even come off crude. His inappropriate language further expresses his immodest nature and need to speak his mind. One fine expression of this is his comment: "What are you waiting for? Your balls to drop?"
All those times Yusuke skipped class weren't because he's smart and thought the lectures were a waste of time. He was just being a juvenile. He's not the brightest crayon in the box and by no means intelligent. There was one point where Yusuke scored 12 out of 100 on his school test, and was rather happy to receive such a high score. However, his stupidity doesn't garner failure. Despite intelligence being one of his weaknesses, his ignorance has earned him some victories in his battles against demons, a stroke of dumb luck you could say. Kurama notably pointed this out when he was under the impression Yusuke intentionally bailed himself out of trouble but found out it was only luck.
During his fight with Sensui, Yusuke realized that he wasn't strong enough to beat him and there was nothing more that could be done for him to grow to the next level. Whereas before this point Yusuke would have considered other options. He simply accepted the fact that he wasn't strong enough to win. Even after being born again as a demon, margins stronger than he was before, he was unhappy with "his" victory even though the human world would be able to find peace once more. Similar to his fight with Younger Toguro, he didn't view his victory as a true win because his enemies had found their resolve through their loss.
After he awoken to his demon ancestry he was revoked as spirit detective because his mere existence posed a threat the spirit world. Yusuke's blood "demonized" him. Had he not agreed to go to the demon world, they likely would have attempted to terminate him from the human world. While Yusuke was somewhat bitter about this, he could also understand why it was they wanted to get rid of him. Despite his loyalty and all of blood, sweat, and tears he suffered through to make the world the safe place it was, he was still a threat. He no longer saw the world through just his prism, but the prism of others. For instance, when Raizen's men came to recruit Yusuke, he could tell by their stench that they still consumed humans. Yusuke didn't hate them for it, or even viewed them as something less than good. Rather, he understood that like everyone else, they needed to live and by doing so they had to eat. He was even more impressed that they were willing to follow under a leader who had different beliefs than them.
His growth continued when he was more capable of fighting Raizen. After Raizen fell blind to hunger, Yusuke was able to bring him out of it due to the similarities he shared with his ancestral mother. It was not long before Raizen fell victim to starvation, passing on the power to Yusuke. Rather than maintaining three different powers, Yusuke proposed a sort of democracy to solve demon world's problems. This development showed that while Yusuke wasn't all brains, he was still capable of conjuring thought. While it's unknown how much thought he put into this idea, it does highlight his methods of fight first, ask questions later aren't as prevalent as they used to be.
